The vibrant metropolis of London is a captivating blend of history, culture, and modern wonders, each offering its own unique narrative. From the historic depths of the Tower of London to the contemporary heights of the London Eye, this city is a treasure trove of experiences that cater to every interest. In my opinion, these are the best places in London you shouldn’t miss. I’ve put together this list based on my experiences and what I believe are the standout attractions of the city. Each location offers something different, and I think they represent the best of what London has to offer to visitors.
Keep in mind, London is always crowded with travelers, so securing your tickets in advance not only avoids the hassle of long queues but also guarantees that you won’t miss out on these remarkable experiences. So, let’s embark on an exploration of London’s most enchanting sights and hidden jewels, making your trip both efficient and unforgettable.
Tower of London
The Tower of London is a personal favorite and arguably the most popular tourist site in London. This sprawling historic complex takes you back in time with its captivating architecture and rich history. Inside the citadel, the White Tower stands out with its exhibition of ancient weapons and knightly armor. The crown jewel, however, is the Crown Jewels exhibition, where the regalia of the British monarchy, including crowns, scepters, and jewelry worn by Queen Elizabeth, are displayed. Even if museums aren’t typically your thing, this place is fascinating and a must-visit. I recommend spending 3-4 hours here. Do note, it’s always crowded, so consider a fast-lane ticket to save time.

London Eye
I vividly remember my ride on the London Eye, located along the River Thames. This giant wheel offers a stunning bird’s-eye view of the city. With a height of 135 meters and 32 transparent cabins, you get a 360-degree view of landmarks like Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. Despite my fear of heights, I found the 30-minute ride exhilarating. The queues can be long, especially in peak seasons, so buying tickets in advance is wise. Opting for the fast lane is a good time-saver.

Thames Cruise from Westminster to Greenwich
The Thames cruise from Westminster to Greenwich is, in my opinion, the most enjoyable of all European river cruises I’ve experienced. It offers a unique perspective of London, passing iconic sites like the Tate Modern. The journey to the charming Greenwich is particularly magical, and well worth spending a few hours exploring. The cruise lasts about an hour and includes entertaining commentary. On my trip, I witnessed the opening of the Tower Bridge, a truly exciting moment. Advance booking is recommended, and I opted for a round-trip ticket, though there are other ways to return from Greenwich.

Portobello Market
I especially love the magical Notting Hill area in London. The vibrant streets, delightful cafes, and unique shops create an enchanting atmosphere. The highlight for me is the Portobello Market, a vibrant street market bustling with vintage items, jewelry, records, and more. The food stalls, offering a variety of international cuisines, are a feast for the senses. If you’re a food lover, join a culinary walking tour to taste the best the area has to offer.

Victoria and Albert Museum
The Victoria and Albert Museum was one of the biggest surprises during my London visit. Anyone interested in design and art will find this place fascinating. It houses an incredible array of exhibitions featuring furniture, jewelry, household items, and more from different eras and cultures. I spent about 5 hours here and still left wanting more. The best part? Admission is free.

British Museum
The British Museum is an institution of awe. The collections here, particularly the Egyptian and Greek artifacts, are mind-blowing. Even a whole day isn’t enough to fully explore this museum. Entrance is free, but I highly recommend a guided tour to get the most out of your visit.

Hefaure – Dreamy Japanese Pancakes
For a taste of the world’s most delectable Japanese pancakes, make a stop at Hefaure, a cozy shop adjacent to Chinatown and just a 4-minute walk from Covent Garden. The one-meter-by-meter shop whips up the most heavenly, melt-in-your-mouth cheesy meringue pancakes. My personal recommendation: indulge in them with whipped cream and fresh strawberries.

The London By Night tour is a standout among all the bus tours I’ve done. It’s an hour and a half of fascinating insights into the city’s secrets, with a dose of British humor. The tour even included a sneak peek at a James Bond movie being filmed, adding an unexpected thrill to the experience.
